Introduction
This software is made for desktop computers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) and some cellular telephones. It will enable you to easily calculate the weight of a gemstone while in or out of a jewelry mounting. Gem Weight Wizard will give you the most likely weight of 21 different species and/or families of commonly traded precious stones in 10 commonly encountered shapes.
Using Gem Weight Wizard is easy. As the Gem Weight Wizard interface display comes up, you will see the first tab in the display. This tab will be listed as the "Gem Tab"...
Step 1 - Select a Gem
Because the vast majority of stones that you will encounter are diamond, corundum (ruby and sapphire) or beryl (emerald), the Gem Weight Wizard puts them at the very top of the list. All the other less popular stones will be listed below these three choices in the combo pull down box in alphabetical order. The specific gravity of each gem will appear after its listing. Simply click on the Gem you want, the selected Gem will be designated by a large check mark. The Gem selected along with its specific gravity will be displayed in the Notes section at the bottom of the display.
Step 2 - Select a Shape
The "Shape Tab" will give you a choice of shapes. From top to bottom the shapes are round, cushion, oval, marquise, pear, heart, emerald cut, princess cut, radiant cut and cabochon. Upon selection of the shape, it will be indicated by a large check mark. The shape and some helpful comments will be displayed in the Notes Section at the bottom of the display.
Step 3 - Select a Size
This tab is used to measure the length, width and depth of the Gem. The length is the longest diameter across the face of the stone in millimeters. The width is the shortest distance across the face of the stone. The width is the shortest diameter on a round faceted or cabochon stone. The depth of the stone is a measure from the table to the culet or bottom of the keel line. Type the measurements in millimeters, using the numerical pad or the numbers in the display keypad. The "period" once again, will separate whole numbers from decimal fractions. Enter the depth. As you key this number additional notes will be displayed in the Notes section at the bottom of the display.
Step 4 - Select an Outline
The gem's outline can be one of these four options - Unknown, Medium, Fat or Very Fat. Select an appropriate outline, and it will have a large check mark on it. Some helpful comments will be displayed in the Notes section at the bottom of the display.
Step 5 - Select Girdle Thickness
Is the stone girdle thin, medium, thick, very thick or extremely thick? When you click the "Girdle Tab", it will show the differences between the visual appearances of these girdles. Chose the one that best corresponds visually.
Step 6 - Select a Bulge Factor
Select the bulge that most looks like the subject stone. Is it "no bulge" like the pavilion of most round diamonds? Does it have a visible bulge or a very large bulge? Choose the one that best corresponds visually. If you cannot see the bulge of the pavilion, assume it is "Medium". When you select the appropriate gem bulge factor, a large check mark will appear on that choice. Helpful comments will be displayed in the Notes section at the bottom of the display.
Step 7 - View Results
The most probable carat weight you key entered in the Gem Weight Wizard will automatically appear on the "Results Tab" The carat weight will appear at the bottom right corner.
